Software to explore new ideas and concepts. It is not technically a painting software, and definitely won't be used to create finished products. However, it's fantastic for the initial concept building stage. It will lead you down roads you do not normally expect or even know of. Great way to do some exploratory artwork. Force yourself out of your comfort zone.

Gimp : Gnu Image Manipulation Program
GNU Image Manipulation Program (also known as Gimp), is a very powerful opensource painting/editing software. The interface is pretty wild for someone coming from Photoshop or the like (Gimpshop alleviates some of this, but it still has a learning curve). Once you get past though, it's extremely powerful. Cakephp installation windows xampp. Has tons of plugins and scripts.

Very good painting program. Opensource for Windows and Linux machines. Emulates a good deal of traditional media well. Very intuitive interface.
Paint.net
Image manipulation and photo editing for Windows only. Seems basic, but it's actually quite a powerful program. Lots of tutorials and plugins for it.
