ICBC is recruiting new drivers in Richmond and the Lower Mainland to determine if telematics technology can improve driving behavior and road safety.
Participants will use a small “smart tag” that will communicate with a pre-installed app on their smartphones.

The app will record driving behaviours such as speeding, braking patterns and level of distracted driving, which researchers will then use to determine how effective the tool is.
ICBC is partnering with Octo, a global telematics company, on this one-year project which will recruit about 7,000 new drivers.
“This Techpilot project will enable us to better understand the role that technology can play in reducing crashes for inexperienced drivers,” said Nicolas Jimenez, president and CEO of ICBC.
Jimenez added that safer roads start from drivers making a “conscious decision to focus on the road.”

Interested participants must have:
- A smartphone with a data plan and Bluetooth capability and
- Received their Class 7N driver’s license within the last four years or
- Less than four years of combined experience (7N and full license)
